The Idea
1989–1996Before there was a Pikachu, there was a shy Tokyo kid catching beetles in the fields outside the city. Satoshi Tajiri's arcade fanzine grows into a studio, and a six-year gamble nearly sinks it before a single cartridge ships.
The Game Boy launches
Nintendo's grey brick comes with a Link Cable port that almost nobody uses for anything but Tetris. Tajiri sees two machines connected by a wire and imagines living creatures crawling through it.
Game Freak becomes a company
Tajiri and illustrator Ken Sugimori turn their hand-stapled arcade fanzine Game Freak into a real development studio — Sugimori will go on to draw every one of the original 151.
"Capsule Monsters" is pitched
Nintendo rejects the pitch repeatedly, but Shigeru Miyamoto champions it and mentors the project. A trademark snag later renames it Pocket Monsters — and Miyamoto suggests releasing paired versions to encourage trading.
